Bike Lights
I must state, I haven't been able to get this light onto my bike yet, since I need a 34.9 mm shim, which I was unaware of the fact that my size is too big for what comes with this light. However, the shin sizes are listed, so it was just my bad for not planning ahead and getting a proper mount.
Anyways, how it compares to my $20 Amazon light: The Amazon light was definitely a red light, but was also small and lacking in terms of battery and brightness. But this light? It can seriously be used as a flashlight, so on a dark road, my bike will be a haunting red glow that no driver could miss. And in a decently well lit location at night, still, nobody will miss you.
Yapping over, TLDR: I have to buy a 34.9 mm clamp to use the light on my freeride bike, but the light has already proved its value in sheer quality and safety from its usage of the light and its brightness. And yes, the side angle is unmissable!
I purchased the light to ride at night specifically in the woods / off trails. We have a Bike HASH group and ride all over day and night. Last week I was on the trail of the hare and was the only one able to find the marks, as most other had headlamps or the $10 chinezium lights. The lighting system works great and lasts a while. it also has a passthrough if you have long runs (over 4 hrs). The best part i have found so far is the great warranty. I broke the quick mount in a crash and they replaced it with shipping for nothing but a good story of how i crashed. For this alone i would purchase knowing you are dealing with good people that are not overseas. Only complaint is the head mount and quick release bike mount have different attachments which require a tool to switch out. wish there was something built in or tool free so you could swap quick or if out and about with no tools you are stuck in whichever mount you currently have on the light.
I’ve been able to ride in several different light conditions and it has worked well in all of them. The side markers make me feel safer, night mode’s downward projection is super visible, quarter turn mount gives you options beyond the supplied mount, battery life is strong. It’s a little bigger than I was expecting, but not when you see the output. No one seemed to be bothered on group rides either. Very happy with the purchase so far.
I purchased an Outbound Lighting Detour light in Feb for my ride from San Diego to Cabo this March. The light is quality built and provide very ample lighting in all applications, at night or in heavy fog. The daytime strobe setting was perfect on two-lane Mexican roads and gave me piece of mind that I was seen. Their customer service is also excellent and if you have any questions or issues, they are happy to help. I will always ride with my Outbound Lighting Detour Lighting light. Many thanks.
This combo was a total game changer for night riding. It completely eliminates shadows and always has light where ever you’re looking even through turns. I ride trails just as fast at night as I do during the day.
Bought the Hangover light in 2023 and I have used it on road, gravel and mountain bike rides. The blinking mode is excellent when road riding - cars will definitely see you. I’ve used the light for riding at night both on my mountain bike and gravel bike. The light pattern is great and it gives you excellent depth perception and visibility. Being able to connect an external power bank means you can run the light on high for a long time.
A few weeks ago I had the light mounted on my helmet, and dropped the helmet. The mount on the light broke. I contacted customer support and they took care of me immediately. In less than a week I had my light back (and a small packet of Nerds candy).
I recommend the Hangover light and Outbound’s customer service!
Best helmet light ever i even have one on my bike as well
Outbound hit it out of the park again with this light!
I’ll address the big question myself and others had when this light came out: No, this is not a radar, but in my opinion that should not be a dealbreaker at all!
What I love about it:
Battery life: This thing lasts so much longer than any other light I have personally tested. Plus it is USB-C rechargeable, which is an absolute must in my opinion.
Weather Resistance: The Blade is sealed up amazingly. The charging port gasket is an extremely snug fit; no chance of water getting in there. Plus, unlike my Garmin, the button to turn the light on and off is completely sealed, so no chance of getting grime, sand, and dirt in there on those crazy gravel adventures (my garmin button is pretty much unusable for this exact reason).
Beam Pattern: This thing is BRIGHT, and it has several great modes to run in. What this light has that I believe sets it apart is the side-pointed lights to give the widest field of view I have seen on any bike light. No issues of a car seeing you if they were approaching perpendicularly.
Design: It’s all in the name … blade! This thing looks sleek on any road and gravel bike. I can’t confirm that it saves watts, but it surely looks like it would ;)
Long story short … if you don’t absolutely need a radar component to your light, I would recommend this over any other competitor!
Have finally tested out my new Outbound Lighting kit riding at O’Dark Hundred Hours. The lights are incredible and I can say that my Ay-Ups are going into permanent storage! Benefits of the new system:
1. The handlebar mount is an ingenious design that fits on 35mm bars with ease. A few challenges initially with the stem being close before I rotated it down and forward. Now I just need to get ride of my brake hoses and dropper cable which reflect the light into my eyes!
2. The helmet light attaches to a standard GoPro style mount. Oresome. I can swap out lights and camera for my annual Swiss Alps tours!
3. The max lumens of both the handlebar (Trail Evo) and helmet (Hangover) lights are a super powerful 2200. Compare that to 700 lumens for the Ay-Ups.
4. No external battery pack. It’s all internal and chargeable via USB-C connectors.
5. The lights easily lasted two hours and were still going strong well into sunrise.
Thanks to Tom Place, the co-owner of OL, for the help in ensuring the lights arrived in time when I was back in the US two weeks ago!
I mounted it to my helmet since I have ebike this light is legit beat light u have front helmet light too evo best light out there
Love the Trail EVO/Hangover combo!
These light do an outstanding job of illuminating the trail. Outstanding cust. Service!
I’m embarrassed to admit why I needed to warranty my light, but let’s just say it was the cleanest light on earth that was nonfunctional. Now I’m back in the game, Knight riding and Beaver hunting. For real.
This review should have happened last year, but I was sadly unable to night ride due to work and crappy weather. Finally, this year I have been on many night rides. Lol
1. ) Amazing light with excellent spread and throw.
2) I actually really like the adaptive mode, which gives it lots of time on the trail.
3.) It is heavier than the Hangover but I don't even notice it on my full face helmet. I did move it back a little but absolutely no tired neck at all. All Outbound lights are seamless to attach to helmets or bars.
My friend just purchased the Gloworm CX wireless light and on paper it should be better than the Portal. It doesn't hold a candle. It does not have the spread or brightness. Not a fan.
My only gripe and a small one. Control over the brightness would be great. Hint hint I will pay for shipping if someone would mess with the firmware to make it happen. 😁 Maybe the medium setting around 1200 lumens? Lol
Overall this product is excellent. Outbound does not make shitty products. I am using the Evo/Portal combo. Loving this combo.
Seller fixed it and send it back for free. Amazing customer service!
I have had many lights in the past ranging from cheap to more premium lights from asia. Neither of them provided the experience I have now with the Outbound lights. With hindsights I should have purchased these lights years ago, as in the last couple of years due to the issues with my previous lights I have given up riding in the dark. Which is a shame as a father with 2 small kids, during the week this is the only time I can get out from autumn to spring. Now Im back in action enjoy the fact that I can ride almost as fast downhill as during daytime. I use these so I do not have to swap mounts between my ebike and non ebike
