Runtime

Measured, not made up.

Every curve here is a real bench run, from a full charge to the low-battery warning, at riding-speed airflow. Adaptive is the mode it ships in and the mode most riders never leave.

Bigger 21700 battery!

In order to hit the same runtime as Trail Evo, and have higher peak brightness than Hangover we shoved a 5,000 mAH genuine Samsung 50E 21700 battery cell and wrapped the light around it.

This results in 43% more capacity over our Hangover light, meaning far longer runtimes (up to 2.5 hours on adaptive, a 50% increase over Hangover).

Even brighter!

While more lumens isn't always the answer, we added in some more brightness and increased the beam pattern width over Hangover to provide even more punch down the trail.

New finely tuned optics with 30% larger TIR cones means higher optical efficiency and more peripheral light to help spot the spooky stuff.

Simple User Interface

Few people read instruction manuals, even fewer want to, so we keep our lights dead simple so that you don’t need an advanced degree to remember some complicated button presses get to the mode you want.

Portal’s soft-touch overmolded top shell has a single, large button right in the middle that’s easy to feel through a thick winter glove in the dark, so you don’t have to hunt blindly around on top of your head just to turn it on.

Frequently asked questions

Portal or Hangover? What's the difference?

Hangover is 105 g with an 18650 inside, and it's plenty for about 80% of riders, especially paired with Evo on the bar. Portal is 170 g with a 21700, so 40% more battery, a punchier centre and a wider spread. It earns its weight on steep, fast, technical terrain where seeing deep into a chute at speed matters. XC and long endurance rides: Hangover. Enduro and DH: Portal.

Will it fit my helmet? Do I have to use adhesive?

Portal uses the standard GoPro mount interface, so it snaps into any action-camera mount. In the box you get a curved adhesive base and a wide one, which between them cover most helmets; a Notched base is available for helmets with a centre ridge. Smith Forefront owners can use Smith's own bolt-on mount. Don't want tape on your lid? GoPro's Vented Helmet Strap Mount works great. Not sure? Email us a photo of the top of your helmet.

Can I run it on the handlebar?

Yes. The Portal QR Adapter swaps the helmet interface for our quick-release shoe, and then it fits the standard QR Handlebar Mount, or the Action Camera QR Mount under a GPS. The optic was designed to split the difference between Evo and Hangover, so it makes a good smaller bar light for gravel and XC.

What are the lumens in each mode?

1650 on high, 500 on medium, 250 on low, rated to minimum output in accredited FL-1 lab testing. We don't headline lumens because the number says nothing about where the light goes, and on a helmet the shape of the beam is what you actually notice.

How long does it run?

About 2.6 hours in adaptive mode, measured on the bench from full to the low-battery warning at riding-speed airflow. Adaptive is the mode it ships in and the one most riders never leave. Full curves for every mode are in the Runtime section on this page. After the warning you get about 20 minutes of get-home light.
